David Haughey (b.1979) is an artist and lecturer based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His art practice sits between installation, moving image and real-time simulation, re-routing the materials of painting and photography through expanded cinema and game engines. He has exhibited in Venice (La Casa Di Corto Maltese), Lisbon (NULL Space), Los Angeles (Prospect Art), Belfast and Derry, with recent projects including Every Square Metre Every Hour (2022) supported by ACNI and Future Screens, and It Crystallises into a Monad (2020), the subject of his PhD Thesis.
Alongside studio and exhibition work, he has two decades’ experience in animation and motion design. From 2013–2021 he created campaigns and short-form pieces for The Royal Opera & Ballet, and major clients like the BBC, Vodafone, BT and Alain de Botton's School of Life. From 2004 to 2014, David delivered commissioned illustration for clients such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Jounal, The Cambridge University Press and Universal Pictures. He is currently developing The Citadel, an Unreal Engine based third-person narrative adventure game.
Haughey graduated BA (Hons) Fine Art from Ulster University (2001) and completed a PhD at the Belfast School of Art (2021) on time and the image within expanded fine-art practice. He is a lecturer in Design & Multimedia at Belfast Metropolitan College, where he leads the Digital Art and Animation course, is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of Queen Street Studios, Belfast.
